G.E.M.S
G.E.M.S Overview
Girls Emerging and Maturing Into Society (G.E.M.S) is one of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter’s signature programs. G.E.M.S. is a program focused on the mentorship of under-served, young, adolescent women. The mission of the program is to promote unity among young women while building and developing poise and character in young women enrolled in local secondary schools through educational, informational, and social initiatives. It is our hope that at the culmination of the program, the young women can utilize the benefits of our initiatives as they emerge and mature into society.
Currently, our program has seventeen (17) young ladies, who are in 9th - 12th grades, and enrolled in secondary schools based in New Providence. Ultimately, we aim to encourage them to aspire for excellence and to make a positive impact in the Bahamian community.
The overarching theme for this year is: ‘Soaring Through Excellence’, and for the first quarter, two impactful sessions have been held. On 3rd February 2024, the first session focused on ‘The Transformative Power of Self-Love’. In this session, we set out to remind the young ladies of the importance of self-love, and encouraged them to utilise several tools to increase overall self-esteem. Our guest speaker, Ms. Chantel O’Brien, Miss Bahamas Universe 2021 and notable motivational speaker, reinforced the power of self-worth and self-love. The session concluded with a mini painting segment, led by Sister Alexis Lightbourne. The segment allowed the young ladies to customise their very own “Pretty Pouches”- a cute bag that holds female essentials for “freshening- up” during the day.
The second session, held on 2nd March 2024, featured a ‘Human Library’ with a focus on self-discovery and self-expression by exploring career options. Chapter members and other esteemed members of the community acted as “books” that our young ladies could “check out” and sit with for ten (10) minutes to “read” or learn all about their professional careers.
Needless to say, this meeting was a very enlightening experience for the young ladies as we hosted approximately twenty (20) professionals from various careers. Each young lady had the opportunity to meet with at least six (6) professionals for a one-to-one discussion.
We are excited about the upcoming sessions for this year and will continue to serve and uplift our local community through this programme.
