Honours Day Scholarship Program

In a grand celebration of achievement and academic excellence, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Eta Psi Omega Chapter proudly hosted its 46th Annual Honours Day Scholarship and Awards Programme from April 2- 7, 2024. Under the theme "Soaring in the Pursuit of Greatness: Crafting a Legacy of Success and Excellence," the Chapter honoured the top forty-four (44) graduating female high school students from across The Bahamas.

The near week-long festivities kicked off on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, with a visit to the House of Assembly where Honourees had the opportunity to witness legislative proceedings and also engaged with distinguished Members of Parliament, including Prime Minister, the Honourable Philip Davis, K.C., M.P., Deputy Prime Minister, the Honourable I. Chester Cooper, M.P., the Honourable Pia Glover Rolle, M.P., the Honourable Clay Sweeting, M.P., the Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Michael Pintard, M.P., the Honourable Adrian White, M.P. and the Honourable Iram Lewis, M.P.

The official launch of the 46th Honours Day  commenced with a Welcome Reception on Thursday, April 4, 2024 setting the tone for the eventful days ahead. Friday, April 5, 2024 began with a morning session themed "Valuing Tertiary Education," featuring representatives from the University of The Bahamas and a special presentation by Mental Health Advocate, Daniah Miller. Honourees also had the opportunity to tour the University campus, gaining valuable insights into college life and the Greek undergraduate experiences courtesy of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Tau Nu Chapter.

The afternoon of Friday was dedicated to the L.E.G.A.C.Y. Summit, a platform for professional and personal development. Esteemed Bahamian women, including former Member of Parliament and the first female Leader of the Opposition, the Honourable Loretta Butler-Turner, shared insights on Leadership. Keshelle Davis discussed Economic Empowerment, Simmone Bowe presented on Guidance and Mentorship, while Dr. Tameka Dames presented on Well-Being and Self Care, and Precious Fortune on Community Engagement and Youth Involvement.

The Honours Day celebrations continued into the weekend with a virtual Examination and Essay session on Saturday morning, highlighting the Chapter’s commitment to academic excellence. This was followed by a Community Service Scavenger Hunt initiative with G.E.M.S. (Girls Emerging and Maturing into Society), another distinguished initiative of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter.

The 46th Annual Honours Day Scholarship & Awards Programme culminated with a Church Service at Christ Church Cathedral, followed by an Awards Ceremony held at the University of The Bahamas on Sunday, April 7, 2024. This ceremony marked the highlight of the programme, publicly recognizing Honourees for their academic achievements and success, reinforcing the Chapter's dedication to nurturing the next generation of leaders.

 

Minister of Education, Technical & Vocational Training, the Honourable GlenysHanna-Martin expressed, "This Sorority has set itself apart in our nation through its outreach, support, and tangible contributions to women's empowerment. Today exemplifies the richness of our nation, particularly the abundance of talented young women being honoured." 

The awards ceremony concluded with the presentation of $100,000.00 in cash and prizes to exceptional students, underscoring the organisation's dedication to nurturing academic achievement and inspiring future leaders. The top two recipients were granted full academic scholarships to Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio) for four years, while ten (10) other awardees received educational grants, laptops, and additional support to enhance their educational endeavours.
